ÿþWhat is Septic Arthritis?

from:

Septic arthritis, which is also known as infectious arthritis, is caused by an infection in one or more joints in the body. These infections are most commonly caused by bacteria, but they can also be caused by a virus or fungus. The symptoms are similar to other types of arthritis and usually include intense pain, inflammation and swelling. These may sometimes be accompanied by chilling and fever. If left untreated, the problem could become chronic, meaning that it could last for years. The chronic forms of septic arthritis are relatively rare, however.

Septic arthritis might be found in any joint in the body, but it most often affects the fingers, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and shoulders. It commonly only affects one joint at a time, but it could affect more than one. People who have experienced recent serious joint injuries, surgeries, or joint replacements may be most likely to suffer septic arthritis. People with blood infections may also be more prone to contract this form of arthritis. The infected blood can carry the bacteria quickly throughout the body.

Other factors that can lead to septic arthritis are old age, a diminished immune system, diabetes, and even other forms of diabetes.

Quick diagnosis and treatment allow for the best prognosis, since the destruction of joints can occur relatively quickly. Testing is done first for determining the specific cause of infection, and deciding which treatment will be most effective. Continued testing determines how effective the treatment is and ensures that the affected joints are benefiting. Tests will likely include xrays, blood cultures, joint fluid cultures, and other blood and fluid evaluations.

Septic arthritis can be treated in a variety of ways, but there is always a goal to destroy the infection and its causes, maintain mobility of the joint, relieve pain, reduce potential damage to the joint, and relieve pressure and inflammation. Sometimes fluid is removed from the affected area to reduce pressure. Medications, surgical procedures and physical therapy may also be used.

Always notify your physician quickly if you believe that you may be suffering from septic arthritis. It could mean the difference between a normally functioning joint and permanent damage that will afflict you the rest of your life.
