ÿþWhat is Gout?

from:

Metabolic arthritis, commonly known as gout, is a painful malady that affects mostly men, but can appear in women too. Women are more likely to be afflicted with gout after menopause. Gout usually strikes suddenly with accompanying acute pain, often in the middle of the night. About three out of four first attacks appear in the small joint at the base of the hallux (big toe).

Gout sometimes appears in toes that have suffered injuries. However, it can also appear in many other joints in the body, such as the wrists, knees, ankles, hands and feet. It can even affect the spine. It is caused when uric acid builds up in the blood and deposits uric acid crystals in the cartilage, tendons and other tissues surrounding joints. This leads to inflammation, stiffness and swelling. The accompanying pain is often both sudden and severe. People who suffer gout also are more likely to have kidney stones than usual. Once a person has suffered a gout attack, the chances of future attacks increase according to the level of uric acid in the bloodstream.

When gout symptoms appear some patients become feverish. Usually the symptoms subside after a few hours or days, although they may last for weeks on rare occasions. After the discomfort eases, the pain normally disappears, as do the swelling and inflammation. However, if left untreated, uric acid crystals may begin to form tophi deposits which are large bumps or nodules. These often form in the outer ear or in the kidneys.

Gout is different from many other types of arthritis in that it usually only affects one joint at a time. Other forms of arthritis are more likely to affect several joints at once.

Uric acid occurs naturally in the body when it breaks down purines. Purines appear naturally in the body, but certain foods are higher in them than others. Foods such as organic meat, asparagus and mushrooms may have a high quantity of purines. The uric acid normally dissolves and passes into the urine. However, when the body produces too much or too little uric acid, the crystals that cause gout can form in the joints.

Any treatment regimen for gout will likely include recommendations for a well-balanced diet. Anyone who believes they are suffering from gout should seek medical assistance.
